Why Maintenance is Key for Energy Systems Longevity
Your generator gets serviced—your solar system deserves attention too. Harmattan dust, heat and everyday use can affect performance. A little attention now can help you avoid discovering a problem on the night you need backup most.
Why preventive maintenance matters
Solar systems contain several components that work together: PV modules, mounting structures, DC cables, protection devices, inverters, batteries, distribution boards and earthing. A weakness in one part of the system can affect the performance of the whole installation.
Regular maintenance gives technicians an opportunity to check connections, look for overheating or loose terminals, confirm that breakers and protection devices are in good condition, review inverter alarms and verify that the battery is operating within its recommended limits.
Solar panels also need attention
During Harmattan, watch for dust build-up and a noticeable drop in solar production. Arrange cleaning when needed, following the panel manufacturer’s instructions. Use trained personnel for rooftop work, and do not walk on panels or tamper with connectors. Have the mounting checked for looseness or corrosion.
Battery health is critical
For systems using lithium batteries, technicians should review battery status, communication with the inverter, state-of-charge behaviour and any recorded alarms. Batteries should be kept within the operating conditions recommended by the manufacturer and installed in an environment with suitable ventilation and temperature control.
Watch for warning signs
- Backup time has reduced noticeably.
- The inverter frequently displays warnings or faults.
- Solar production appears lower than expected.
- Breakers, cables or terminals become unusually warm.
- The battery does not charge or discharge normally.
- There are unusual sounds, smells or visible damage.
These signs do not always mean that a major component has failed, but they should be investigated promptly by a qualified technician.
Protect your investment
A well-designed system combined with routine inspection and timely repairs can deliver more dependable service and reduce the risk of avoidable replacement costs. Maintenance is especially important for homes and businesses that depend heavily on their solar system every day.
Illamab Energy Solutions provides system checks, troubleshooting and maintenance support for residential and commercial solar installations. If your system is showing faults, reduced backup time or declining performance, contact our team for an assessment.
